Finding Freedom from Sin: How Jesus Cleanses What We Cannot
In a world filled with darkness and evil, we often feel overwhelmed by the weight of our own failures and shortcomings. Just as the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill coated wildlife in thick, black oil that seemed impossible to remove, sin has a way of staining our lives in ways that feel permanent and hopeless.
What Is Sin and Why Does It Matter?
The Bible teaches us a difficult truth: every person who has ever lived, except Jesus, is a sinner. Romans tells us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” This isn’t about making bad decisions occasionally – it’s about a fundamental problem that affects every human heart.
Sin is like that thick oil coating the animals after the spill. It clings to us, weighs us down, and we cannot remove it on our own. No amount of scrubbing, trying harder, or good intentions can fully cleanse us from its effects.
Why Do We Need an Advocate?
In 1 John 2:1-2, we discover that God has provided a solution to our sin problem. The apostle John writes to believers with deep love, calling them “my little children” and explaining that while we should strive not to sin, when we do fall short, “we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”
An advocate is like a defense attorney – someone who listens to you perfectly and speaks on your behalf perfectly. Jesus serves as our mediator between us and God the Father. He understands our struggles because He was fully human, yet He can represent us perfectly because He is also fully God.
Jesus Listens and Speaks for Us
When we’re wrestling with persistent sin or feeling overwhelmed by our failures, we can talk directly to Jesus. He’s listening right now and wants to defend us before God the Father. This isn’t about earning His attention through good behavior – He’s already there, ready to hear from us
What Does It Mean That Jesus Is Our Propitiation?
The word “propitiation” might sound complicated, but it carries profound meaning. Jesus is the sacrifice made in our place for our sins. While we deserved justice for our wrongdoing, Jesus took that punishment upon Himself.
Romans 5 explains this beautifully: “While we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly… God demonstrates his own love toward us in this, that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Grace Is Free, Not Earned
Jesus didn’t wait until we cleaned up our act to offer salvation. His sacrifice is applied to our lives by grace – meaning it’s completely free – through faith. This means believing that Jesus is not just God, but that He is your personal Lord and Savior.
Simply acknowledging that God exists isn’t enough. Even Satan believes in God. True faith means making Jesus the ruler of your life, following His ways instead of your own, and trusting Him as your Savior.
How Is Jesus the Redeemer of the Whole World?
The Christmas story reveals that Jesus came as “Savior,” “Christ,” and “Lord” – not just for a select few, but for people of every ethnicity, nationality, and background. The message of Christianity has always been consistent: it’s not about religion or looking perfect on the outside; it’s about having a relationship with Jesus.
Christianity Is for the Dirty, Not Just the Clean
You don’t need to clean yourself up before coming to Jesus. In fact, Christianity is specifically for people who recognize they’re spiritually dirty and need cleansing. Just as Dawn dish soap was the perfect solution for removing oil from wildlife – not too harsh to cause harm, but strong enough to remove the contamination – Jesus is the perfect solution for our sin problem.
Can We Actually Stop Sinning?
With Jesus as our advocate, propitiation, and redeemer, we can indeed “throw off” sin. Hebrews 12:1-2 encourages us to “lay aside every sin that entangles” and “run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus.”
This doesn’t mean perfection overnight, but it does mean we have the power to fight sin rather than letting it grow and expand in our lives. We can live victoriously even in this weary world by trusting in Jesus daily.
Daily Cleansing Through Faith
Just as the oil-soaked animals needed repeated cleaning, we need daily cleansing from sin. This happens not through our own efforts, but by continually trusting in Jesus, leaning on Him, and allowing His grace to wash over us.
Life Application
This week, instead of trying to clean up your life through willpower alone, turn to Jesus as your advocate. When you’re struggling with sin or feeling overwhelmed by your failures, remember that He is listening and ready to speak on your behalf.
Take time each day to confess your struggles to Him, not because you have to earn His love, but because He’s already there waiting to help. Trust Him not just as Savior, but as the Lord of your life – the one who guides your decisions and priorities.
Ask yourself these questions:
Have I truly made Jesus the Lord of my life, or am I still trying to be in control?
When I sin, do I run to Jesus or try to hide from Him?
Am I daily trusting in His grace, or am I trying to earn His approval through my own efforts?
How can I “throw off” the sins that keep entangling me by relying on Jesus rather than my own strength?
