Finding Energy for Life Through the Holy Spirit
Have you ever wished you could have more energy? You go to the gym, try to eat right, but it never seems to be quite enough. Part of the human condition is that we lack the energy, power, and willpower to truly do life well. But what if there was a source of energy available to you that’s bigger and better than anything you could ever produce on your own?
What Does the Bible Say About Spiritual Energy?
In First Corinthians 12:1-11, Paul reveals something remarkable about the energy available to believers. In the original Greek language, Paul actually uses the word “energy” twice in this passage. He writes about how God “energizes” or “empowers” all spiritual gifts in everyone, and how all these gifts are “energized” by the same Spirit.
“‘Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of service, but the same Lord. And there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.'” – 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 (ESV)
The key takeaway is this: Everything God wants for you – the energy to be who God wants you to be and the energy to do what God wants you to do – comes through the energy of the Spirit.

This isn’t just physical energy we’re talking about. The Holy Spirit provides energy for your mind, your soul, your will, and your resolve. It’s the energy you need for transformation into the person God wants you to be.

Who Is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit isn’t just a force – He’s the third person of the Trinity. From the very beginning of creation, we see Him at work. “‘In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.'” – Genesis 1:1-2 (ESV)
The Spirit gives life to everything that Jesus is involved in. Jesus came, died on the cross, and gave you life by the Spirit. Jesus rose from the dead through the Holy Spirit’s power. Now He lives inside of you, which means you have access to that same energy.
How Does the Holy Spirit Energize Believers?
The Spirit Energizes You to Believe Truth, Not Falsehood
What you believe affects how you behave. The Holy Spirit’s job is to guide you into truth because Satan, the father of lies, wants to keep you trapped in falsehood.
Before becoming believers, Paul tells the Corinthians they “were led astray to mute idols.” Idols can’t speak, but God does. We often create functional idols out of good things – wealth, power, health, family, country, opinions, pleasure – but when we rely on these instead of God, we fall into bondage.
The acid test of the Spirit’s presence in your life is simple: You don’t reject Jesus, but instead declare “Jesus is Lord.” This is one of the biggest statements you can make, acknowledging that He made, owns, and controls all things.
The Spirit Energizes You to Use Your Life for the Common Good
“‘To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.'” – 1 Corinthians 12:7 (ESV)
If you’re a believer, you have spiritual gifts – enhanced abilities that the Spirit empowers within you. These gifts aren’t meant to dead-end inside you but to flow out into a world that needs what you have to offer.
Here’s how it works: God the Father gave us Jesus. Jesus gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives you gifts. Then you’re energized to use those gifts for others’ benefit.
How Can I Be Filled with the Holy Spirit?
The Bible commands us to “be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). This isn’t a one-time event but an ongoing need. Just like your car’s gas gauge never goes up as you drive, you need constant refilling by the Holy Spirit.
When was the last time you simply sat down and said, “Holy Spirit, fill me”? Just as you go to the gas station when your tank is low, you need to regularly ask the Spirit to fill you.
This applies to everyone – children, students, working adults, and even retirees. You might think retirement means the Spirit is done with you, but actually, you may need Him more than ever during those years of increased free time and self-direction.
How Do I Discover My Spiritual Gifts?
Don’t panic trying to figure out what your gifts are. The secret isn’t to go searching for your gifts – it’s to let your gifts find you. Here’s how:
– Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you
– Take baby steps of obedience
– Ask Him to open your eyes to see needs, people, or tasks He wants you to address
– Step out in faith and watch your gifts emerge
Remember, you are essential to God’s mission. Just like a car needs every part to function, or a football team needs every position filled, the Church needs your unique gifts to complete Christ’s mission.
Life Application
This week, commit to asking the Holy Spirit to fill you daily. Set aside time each morning to pray, “Holy Spirit, fill me today. Show me one small step I can take to serve others with the gifts You’ve given me.”
Ask yourself these questions:
– When did I last specifically ask the Holy Spirit to fill me?
– What needs around me might God want to address through my gifts?
– Am I willing to take baby steps of faith to discover how God wants to use me?
– How can I move from being a consumer of spiritual energy to a conduit of it?
The Holy Spirit wants to energize you for truth and service. He’s available, He’s powerful, and He’s ready to work through you. The question isn’t whether He can help you – it’s whether you’ll ask Him to fill you and then step out in faith to see what He’ll do through your life.
