When Running Feels Easier Than Obeying
Devotional
Have you ever found yourself moving in the opposite direction of where you knew God was calling you? Jonah did exactly that. Called to Nineveh, he boarded a ship headed for Tarshish. Yet even in that moment of full rebellion, God did not abandon Him. The storm that followed was not simply punishment. It was pursuit.
God’s mercy has a way of chasing us into the very places we try to hide. The sailors on that ship had no background in the faith of Israel, yet through one disobedient prophet, they were being drawn toward the living God. That is the kind of sovereign grace that should stop us in our tracks.
Maybe you are in a season where obedience feels costly or inconvenient. Maybe you have been quietly rowing in the opposite direction, hoping God will not notice. He notices. And more than that, He cares enough to pursue you.
The good news is that God’s pursuit is not rooted in anger. It is rooted in love. His mercy does not wait for you to get it all together before it moves toward you. It moves first. That is the God we serve, one who meets us not where we deserve to be met, but where we actually are.

“Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, ‘What is this that you have done!’ For the men knew that he was fleeing from the Lord, because He had told them. Then they said to him, ‘What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?’ For the sea grew more and more tempestuous. He said to them, ‘Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.'” – Jonah 1:11-12

Prayer
Lord, thank You that Your mercy pursues us even in our disobedience. Give us the courage today to stop running and to trust that Your call is better than any direction we could choose on our own. Amen.
