From Surface Fear to Soul-Deep Reverence
Devotional
There is a kind of fear that is purely instinctive. When a storm rolls in, when a diagnosis arrives, when a relationship fractures, we feel it immediately. That fear is real, but it is only skin deep. It is a response to circumstances.
The sailors on Jonah’s ship started there. They were terrified of the storm. But when Jonah named the God who created the very sea threatening to swallow them, something shifted. They moved from fearing the storm to fearing the One who made the storm. That is a profound transformation.
God invites us into that same movement. He does not want us to simply manage our anxiety about difficult circumstances. He wants us to encounter Him so deeply that our fear is redirected toward Him in reverence and trust. When we truly grasp who God is, the storms do not disappear, but they lose their power to define us.
The question is not whether you will face storms. You will. The question is where your eyes are fixed when they arrive. Fix them on the One who made the sea and the dry land, and you will find a fear that steadies rather than shakes you.

Prayer
Lord, when fear rises in me, redirect my eyes toward You. Grow in me a reverence for You that is deeper than my fear of any circumstance I face. Amen.
